Way back in February 2012, celebrated director Whit Stillman was in Dublin to chat about his latest film Damsels in Distress and expressed an interest in making a film here in Ireland. Partly because he likes the place but also (importantly) because his daughter lives here!Three years on, that's finally coming true.
Stillman will reunite with his Last Days of Disco stars Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny for a film called Love andFriendship - likely the script he wouldn't say more about in 2012. It's an adaptation of Jane Austen's Lady Susan - a short novel which she wrote early in her career but which remained unpublished until 50 years after her death.
It's the tale of a scheming woman in 18th century England who is on the hunt for husbands for herself and her daughter - there's just the minor inconvenience that she's already married. It's a real inversion on Austen's classic characters to have a female role that's so driven and strong, and should make a great role for Beckinsale.
Stillman, Beckinsale and Sevigny previously worked together on 1998's The Last Days of Disco, which played a major part in getting the English actress noticed in the United States. As well as this trio, Love & Friendship also features Stephen Fry as Sevigny's long-suffering husband and Twilight's Xavier Samuel.
Love and Friendship will begin its shoot in Ireland in April 2015.
