I thought The Boxtrolls was a lot of fun but I honestly didn't expect it to have the box office attention its received so far. Mainly because its a little bit weird and gross.
Thankfully, I'm totally wrong. The film opened to a healthy $17 million in the States recently and is still riding high in the UK charts. With almost $60 million earned worldwide already, it's looking like a safe bet it will beat 2012's ParaNorman (which topped out at $107 mill and might even beat Coraline which was a tad over $120 million).
That's good news for fans of strange stop motion things and there's more good news, Laika just penned a deal with Focus Features and Universal to distribute their next three films. That means there's a vision in the company for at least the next six to seven years (given the long development cycle of stop motion films) and there are already plans for at least two films.
We don't know which film we'll actually see next from Laika but whatever it is we'll be on line the first day to check out some more stop motion strangeness!
The Boxtrolls is in cinemas now.
