Short movies are a great proving ground, giving potential future filmmakers the chance to practise their skills and get national and international recognition at film festivals.
This is no doubt the hope for the folks involved with a new Irish horror short that's currently in production in Limerick. It's the first film from new company Spade Lion Production, which grew out of the work of professional magician and Limerick native Steve Spade.
Spade Lion - which was founded by Spade and fellow local man Paddy Murphy - wants to be a new voice in Irish film production, and they're set to make a big splash with their first short called Ensnared. The concept came from an award winning short written by Murphy and he's also in charge of writing the script and directing the film.
While its definitely a horror film, Murphy wants to point out they're trying for something a little more subtle and insidious: "The idea with Ensnared was to write something intrinsically horrific, psychologically, as opposed tosomething with a load of jump scares. The idea is that you should come awayfrom Ensnared questioning everything. It will hopefully dwell in audience’s minds long after the creditsroll."
To bring the main character to life, Spade Lion looked to actorKevin Kiely Jnr. He's appeared in the likes of The Dark Knight Rises and World War Z and is looking forward to the challenge of this tortured role.
Ensared is currently in production, and will aim to be in festivals by late 2014.
