Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne up for new J.K. Rowling adaptation

The rumours have been swirling for awhile but now its official- Eddie Redmayne will enter the Harry Potter universe.

But we're not getting new sequels or prequels to the tale, not yet at least. Instead, the Oscar-winner will head up the cast for the adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

It's the title of a 2001 very short book - at only 42 pages - which was supposed to be Harry Potter's copy of the actual book from the stories. It was mostly created to earn money for Comic Relief so it wasn't the most obvious place to start for a new spin off franchise.

For the film, it has all been considerably expanded, taking us to New York around 1920 to spend time with the character of Newt Scamander - a famed locater of these incredible creatures. This is the part Redmayne will play, and it's planned as the first of a trilogy, presumably following his adventures as he travels the world and finds the beasts and relays it all in a book of some sort.

Rowling is on board for her first screenplay credit and she's just turned in her first draft and Redmayne has accepted the part. It has also been confirmed that Potter alum David Yates will be directing, he managed most of the back half of the HP films, and the behind the camera staff will be full of returning names and faces.

With a script, star and director in the mix and a looming release date of November 2016, expect this film to get shooting very soon indeed.
