Guillermo del Toro is exactly the person who you would want to direct a movie about giant interdimensional monsters going toe to toe with equally imposing human made robots in a bid to save the planet. So it's just as well Pacific Rim exists.
As far as we can tell, that's literally the entire plot for the Mexican directors latest and we have absolutely no problem suggesting that it will be the best film featuring tussles between city sized bots and monster things you'll see next year.
The first trailer for Pacific Rim has just arrived - check it out.
I'm pretty sure that trailer ended with a massive robot rocket punching a towering nastie in the face. I would like to go there now please.
The film stars the marvellous Idris Elba (who gives a slightly wonky speech here) as well as considerably less well known names like Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. You'll even find Charlie Day in there as well as del Toro stalwart Ron Perlman.
In truth, the quality of the effects on show here are wildly variable (particularly if you watch in HD) and we barely get a glimpse of the monsters at this stage but - in all seriousness - how could this be anything less than a ridiculous roller coaster ride of a film?
Pacific Rim is in cinemas from the 12th of July 2013. More as we get it.
