Pitch Perfect 2 is not only a pretty hilarious sequel but its also earned over $250 million worldwide, that's the 13th highest grossing movie of the year, ahead of Tomorrowland, Jupiter Ascending and not far off Insurgent.
So it's a hit, which means sequel.
A report from THR suggests that writer Kay Cannon is being courted to return. She penned the first two films and would quite naturally be a key component in bringing back the magic for a third time. That deal isn't confirmed just yet but it's reasonable to assume that Universal will make it happen, given the success of the series so far.
What's less clear is how the story will go. The continuing plot is likely to follow young Hailee Steinfeld after the events of the last film, and could perhaps see her crafing another acapella supergroup to use for catchy tunes and quirky comedy. That would leave room for previous stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson to return in some kind of mentor/comic relief role. That will work for fans and if the songs are good no one else will mind very much.
More as we get it, but expect more Pitch Perfect in the next couple of years.
