Sinister was a surprisingly effective little horror number released in 2012 starring Ethan Hawke as a writer who gets involved with a demonic presence. The ending was a big naff but otherwise it was a slick and well played shocker from Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. Some success followed so both filmmakers are back for the sequel, though this time they're sticking to writing duties.
That left the directors chair open for Irish helmer Ciaran Foy, best known for Citadel which finally saw a release in 2013. There was lots of promise in that Scotland-based chiller so we can't wait to see how he does on his first American picture. We've got a look at the plot below but first check out the debut footage from the film in a short teaser which still manages to be incredibly creepy.
The plot goes: In the aftermath of the shocking events in “Sinister,” a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Buhguul continues to spread with frightening intensity.
Sossaman is the only realname in the film (and its been a long time since the days of A Knight's Tale in 2001) and the unproven director also suggests this is a cheaper production. But producer Jason Blum knows how to create a hit and Cargill and Derrickson will be keen to keep some control over this potential franchise. And with Cargill's previous life as a film critic, he should know what makes a good film by now!
Sinister 2 is set for release in August 2015.
