I sometimes forget that there's actually a sequel to Independence Day in the works.
Not because the 1996 original is an unassailable classic (it's grand, like) but more because it so totally belongs to the 90s and the kind of sci-fi tinged excess which we don't really see outside of comic-book films anymore.
Still it is happening and not only is director Roland Emmerich back but he's returning with some familar faces including Bill Pulman (who once was the President), Brent Spiner and Vivica A. Fox. Oh and there's also a science-guy called David Levison, played by Jeff Goldblum.
Producer Dean Devlin - who has worked with Emmerich since the days of Stargate - shared a snap with Goldblum on his Instagram.
That's pretty cool to see and I'm looking forward to seeing what Goldblum does with the character. The film is just about ready to shoot in New Mexico so the cast will be out in force, and you can expect plenty of social media stuff and the ever present leaks. Will Smith isn't back (which is just fine) and the plot will see humanity dealing with a new invasion by those aliens from the first film 20 years later.
Independence Day 2 is in cinemas in June 2016.
