The story of Edward Snowdenis one that has to be told, and there's never been a better time to tell it. Acclaimed director Oliver Stone has a version in the works with an incredible cast and the first trailer is here but all we can think about is how bizarre Joseph Gordon-Levitt sounds in the role.
Check it out.
It's a really strange accent, and honestly fairly distracting in the middle of all sorts of other fancy things which are happening in the trailer. There's certainly an impressive cast, with Shailene Woodley, Nicolas Cage, Tom Wilkinson and Zachary Quinto in plain site, as well as a different role for Rhys Ifans than we're used to seeing.
Then there's Gordon-Levitt, a charasmatic actor who certainly has the skills to pull off the role but seems to be trying too hard to mimic the tones of Snowdon. He's also a bit old to be playing the part at 35. Now for the record Snowden does have a somewhat clipped way of speaking but it's nowhere near as odd as what the actor is attempting.
Here's the famouos interview with The Guardian from 2013.
Now over a full two hour film it's likely to be less distracting than in this short burst, and maybe its helpful for the actor to get behind an accent for a story which happened so recently on the world stage. We'll have to wait and see.
Snowden will be in cinemas in September 2016.
