Steve McQueen's modified Porsche is up for auction

Legendary actor and car enthusiast Steve McQueen modified his 911 Turbo so that he could escape police pursuit. The classic car is going to be auctioned off, where it’s thought that it could fetch more than $1 million.

McQueen fitted the Porsche with a special switch that killed the rear lights if police were trying to catch him. He also customised the slate grey Porsche with a sunroof, dual mirrors, sports seats, and larger wheels.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is the last Porsche that McQueen bought. He purchased it in 1976 and held onto it until 1978. The actor died in 1980 at the age of 50.

The car is being sold in Monterey, California. Ordinarily, such a car would be worth around $100,000, but with McQueen’s name attached, it’s expected to go for a seven-figure sum. A 1966 Porsche 911 owned by McQueen sold for around $1,281,350 back in 2011.

Cars aren’t the only things that go for more than their expected value once the actor’s name is involved. The sunglasses he wore in The Thomas Crown Affair sold for $55,000 in 2006.

The Porsche 911 Turbo, according to Chad McQueen, the actor’s son, is “the last of the McQueen cars.”
