The Expendables 3 was, in some ways, my favourite in the series yet - mainly because it managed to include elements of proper comedy and a few fresh faces (like Antonio Banderas and Wesley Snipes) who did not totally suck.
But the decision to make the film PG-13 definitely caused some problems, taking the over the top violence and language (which are absolutely plus points of this kind of filmmaking) out of the equation. And who are they kidding - no kids even want to see these old dudes on screen!
And it seems creator Sylvester Stallonepretty much agrees. In a recent interview with Craveonline for the home video release of The Expendables 3, he talks about the possibility of future Expendables being R-rated:
"Absolutely unequivocally yes.I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone’s part in trying to reach a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I’m quite certain it won’t happen again."
He's absolutely right, and its great to hear it come from the mouth of the person who (let's be honest) clearly totally runs the show. It's just a shame that they couldn't have allowed that kind of material to be in the mix this time, where it might have contributed to making a genuinely enjoyable action flick.
Maybe the extended gorier version on the blu-ray will restore some of our faith.
The Expendables 3 hits home video on the 8th of Decembe 2014.
