According to Deadline, Michael Bay is back in charge and is working on the film, which will be released on June 3rd, 2016. It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that a sequel was planned. After all, TMNT is a long-running and valuable property. It was likely to get a sequel if it was any way successful.
It is somewhat surprising that the sequel is in development already. Perhaps even more surprising is how well the film opened despite being panned by many critics. TMNT beat Guardians of the Galaxy, which took in $43 million in its second week in cinemas.
Naturally, there are no plot details to share and it’s unclear if the cast will resume their roles for the follow-up. But there’s plenty of time for these details to fall into place; 2016 is a long way off.
