The trailer for the new Terminator film is here. And it goes a little something like this.
As much as it would be easy to be cynical, I genuinely think this looks great. The time travel element allows for plenty of flexibility in terms of the narrative and the new additions (like the guardians version of the T-800) is a pretty inspired new slice of this sci-fi puzzle.
It's a shame that none of these elements can be kept a secret but they do give Arnie a more interesting role that doesn't require shedloads of CGI and should see him face off against a younger version of himself. The action looks large without getting confused between too many protagonists and I can't wait to see what fun stuff a 2015 version of the T-1000 can get up to.
There are issues outside the realm of what this trailer shows. For one thing, I've never been convinced by Jai Courtney in any of his roles and he's got a pivotalplace here as Kyle Reese. And there's the lurking spectre of the PG-13 rating, something which has been all but confirmed. T2 was r-rated and remains the highest-grossing film in the series.
That said, a high impact sci-fi action flick doesn't need gallons of blood, with battles between bots able to show plenty of carnage without having much effect on the rating.
Time, as always, will tell.
Terminator Genisys is in cinemas in July 2015.
