Spider-Man fans are still awaiting the return of Peter Parker, and another origin story, but that hasn’t stopped Sony from looking to the future. It has scheduled pre-production on the sequel for early 2013 with a release then pencilled in for May 2014. The first draft of the script was written by
James Vanderbilt, but
Alex Kurtzman and
Roberto Orci have been brought in to do a rewrite.
The duo has previously been responsible for blockbuster titles such as
Transformers,
Star Trek and
Mission: Impossible III. Producer Matt Tolmach said that he was thrilled to welcome the pair to the family. Tolmach said, “Alex and Bob have a unique ability to write great character and spectacular action that makes them pitch perfect for Spider-Man. They’ve been friends of ours for a long time and they have an exciting take on the franchise.”
Kurtzman and Orci said that they are excited to be working on this project and the direction that Sony is taking the film. They said, “We grew up as huge Spider-Man fans so, to us, the opportunity to work on this film is akin to being handed the Holy Grail.” It is always pleasing to see fans being given the reins of a franchise and we hope that Kurtzman and Orci can take it in the right direction. Of course, we also have to hope that the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man will be treated well.
