The Departed is one of Martin Scorsese's best films, but it's easy to forget that it's actually based on a Chinese flick called Infernal Affairs. And it looks like that franchise is expanding once more with a TV series in the works.
Once upon a time the very notion of a TV series version of a beloved film would have filled fans with horror but the quality of spin offs has been pretty immense lately, including shows like Fargo and Bates Motel which do things that are both clever and interesting with the initial premise.
The latest news and The Departed show is that it has landed at Amazon and is really just using the basic premise to kick off an entirely new story. This time the action moves from Hong Kong or Boston to the mean streets of Chicago, and a young cop goes undercover to infiltrate a vicious drug ring. At the same time, the drug runners manage to plant one of their own inside the police department.
Given all the possibilities for drama in this kind of situation, the idea of spreading it over a whole series makes sense. We would get to spend more time with both operatives as they burrow into their new roles and desperately try to keep the truth from coming out.
Deadline has the new about Amazon snapping up the property but there's no word on when it might hit screens.
