The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby is a film with a fascinating concept. The story is about a difficult break up between characters played by Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy. They share that part of the tale but then the narrative divides into two films. One with the subtitle Her follows Chastain's story while the flip side is titled Him.
And writer/director Ned Benson created two completely separate films which debuted in rough form at TIFF in 2013. Then Miramax got involved and a a third version - called Them - was put together. You can get an idea of how making three films and then trying to sell the concept in 2 and a half minutes looks with the international trailer below.
In the States, the version called Them is set to premiere in September and it's likely to include some kind of split screen shenanigans. Her and Him will also get a limited release there in October, and that's obviously the best way to see the film as the director intended.
A UK and Irish release date has yet to be announced.
