Baz Luhrman’s latest visual epic moves to the new year.
Luhrman was riding the crest of a wave in the wake of the massive success of
Moulin Rouge, with the disappointing
Australia putting a damper on his excessive style for a few years. He’s back with a particularly lurid take on
The Great Gatsby, but we’ve just got word that we won’t be seeing it as soon as some had hoped.
Based on the famed novel by
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the movie was primed for a holiday season release in the states but
Warner Bros has confirmed that the film will move to a summer 2013 slot. The official reason for the change is that the scope of the film is better suited to a summer blockbuster period and that makes a certain amount of sense, given the cast, the 3D and the visuals. But there’s also no denying that
Gatsby faced serious opposition in late 2012 from the likes of
The Hobbit, Djan
go
Unchained and still others, making the move all the more necessary.
Check out the unsurprisingly attractive trailer.
The film stars
Leonardo DiCaprio as the mysterious and captivating Gatsby, with an impressive supporting cast including
Carey Mulligan,
Isla Fisher,
Joel Edgerton and
Tobey Maguire and a script penned by
Luhrman himself and co-
Moulin Rouge scribe
Craig Pearce.
Look for The Great Gatsby in cinemas in mid 2013.
