The Lego Movie’s follow-up, cleverly titled The Lego Movie Sequel, will be released in 2018.
Rob Schrab will make his directorial debut for the movie. Schrab is known for directing TV comedies, including Community, Parks and Recreation, and The Mindy project. He also wrote and directed The Sarah Silverman Program.
The creators of The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, are still on board, though they won’t be directing the project this time around. Instead, they are writing the movie and will serve as producers alongside returning producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee.
The duo was full of praise for Schrab. They released a joint statement that said, “He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humour, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project.”
Those behind The Lego Movie are striking while the iron is hot. The Lego Movie Sequel will be the third Lego-related movie released in as many years. Also in the pipeline are a ninja-themed spin-off, Ninjago, in 2016 and a Lego Batman film in 2017.
