Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the writer-directors behind the 21 Jump Street series, The Lego Movie, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – all winners in our books – are set to work on a new animated Spider-Man film.
Sony today announced that the pair will be producing and writing the treatment for the new film. It’s unknown if they will also direct the film, but there’s plenty of time to lock that detail down. The animated Spider-Man will not be released until July 20th, 2018.
The new film will exist independently from the live-action Spider-Man movie that’s in development. And don’t worry Spider-Man fans, the animated movie’s release will not affect the live action film’s release date. That is still scheduled for 2017. It will also have no impact on plans for Spider-Man to appear in an upcoming Marvel film.
It will be interesting to see Lord and Miller’s take on the character. They’re certainly known for their humour and pop-culture references, so it’s likely to be the funniest we’ve seen Spider-Man be in years.
