There are several different ways of doing a martial arts movie. In the Western mould, wires and CG and cutaways are used to give the impression of force and impact. But in the East, things are very different.
Thai features like Ong Bak showcased the full body contact fighting that was a revelation for international audiences and Gareth Evans and his Indonesian crew are continuing that tradition. These stunt men fall and take hits for real - and it looks so much better on camera.
Take this much trailered mud fight in The Raid 2. Those dudes are really falling on their back in the mud. It may provide a little bit of protection and they're certainly wearing some padding as well but its still amazing to watch.
For all we know, that leg break might be real too!
