There have been rumours about another big screen outing for the Power Rangers for awhile now, it might even actually release in 2016 but until then, we have POWER/RANGERS.
Here's the skinny, and its good skinny so listen up.
Joseph Kahn is a long time music video director who has worked with acts like the Backstreet Boys, Britney Speaks, Eminem and Taylor Swift. He also, back in 2004, made an utterly daft film called Torque which was basically The Matrix with motorcycles. I kinda love it and you really should seek it out if it passed you by.
Kahn isn't massively interested in the Hollywood machine, rarely emerging to direct a feature with his last the over the top but enjoyable sci-fi/horror thing Detention in 2011. Instead, for the last year or so, he's been working away at a secret project - POWER/RANGERS.
This is a totally R-rated, high octane short set in the Power Rangers universe starring James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackoff. And its pretty fecking excellent, if more than a little NSFW!
It's a bit of a mental thing really given the names involved, and its all put together with the help of Adi Shankar, the inventive producer behind Dredd and The Grey who also worked on bootleg shorts for the likes of The Punisher and Venom.
There's a fun interview with Kahn over on HitFlix where he reveals that the project pretty much remained a secret right up until it was released online (which is incredibly rare in this industry) and that it was being shown around Hollywood, but not for the reasons you might imagine. Kahn has no interest in the Power Rangers universe beyond this short, and doesn't want to be in the running to helm the blockbuster version due next year.
It's just a thing to enjoy, which is a rare enough treat in this day and age.
