It might be summer, depending on the day in Ireland, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make some time to check out a few flicks while hoping that the rain holds off for the weekend.
June is an oddly quiet month this year, with most of the bigger blockbusters choosing to debut a little earlier in the summer months and a few other movies – like Suicide Squad and Doctor Strange – holding on for a little while yet.
So we’ve picked five great movies to look forward to this month, read on for more!
The Nice Guys - 03/06
Lethal Weapon writer and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black is back with a new buddy movie that is pretty familiar and also downright hilarious. Russell Crowe is the (sort of) straight man and Ryan Gosling the looney loser in a story of murder, mayhem and mystery.
No one makes films like Shane Black and after the massive hit of Iron Man it’s great to see him taking on something a little smaller. This 70s set comedy-thriller is a must-see.
The Boss - 10/06
Melissa McCarthy continues to be the queen of comedy with another raucously good time at the time in The Boss. It’s the tale of a massively successful woman who is brought down when she’s caught being very illegal. So she has to build herself back up.
The film also stars Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage and Kathy Bates and is directed by Ben Falcone – who is also McCarthy’s real-life husband. Reviews in the States weren’t great but we think this looks like fun.
The Conjuring 2 - 17/06
A new tale of terror from the team behind The Conjuring and Insidious. James Wan is a brilliant horror director and returns to the genre after spending some time tossing cars around in Furious 7.
He’s got a top notch cast including Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga and Irish folks Simon Delaney and Maria Doyle Kennedy for a story based on the Enfield hauntings in the UK in the 1970s. The Conjuring was a massive hit, and this one is going to be even bigger.
The Secret Life of Pets - 18/06
2016 has been pretty light when it comes to decent animated movies, so hopefully that’s about to change. The trailers for this movie make it seem hilarious, and it comes from Illumination Entertainment, who have released those very popular Minion movies.
This story is all about what your pets get up to when you’re not around, and while it might sound like Toy Story with fur it’s looking a lot zanier, and includes voice work from Louis C.K., Ellie Kemper, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks.
Independence Day: Resurgence - 23/06
Summer movies don’t come much bigger than this. 20 years after the original invasion those alien nasties are back – but Earth is ready with a whole mess of new technology and a cast of fresh and familiar faces.
Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and even Brent Spiner are back for this long-awaited sequel, and there are newcomers like Liam Hemsworth, William Fichtner and Jessie Usher – who plays Will Smith’s stepson. Smith’s character died off screen in the intervening years because the actor wouldn’t return. Ooops!
