Laika is the current king of stop motion. So far they've produced three features- Coraline, The Boxtrolls and ParaNoman, which I think might be one of the best animated films of the last decade.
Their next is Kubo and the Two Strings, which is certainly the most ambitious thing the studio has ever produced. There's a huge scale and an epic tale mixing Eastern mythology with a boys quest to find out about his mysterious past. There be magic and also monsters, which are looking pretty incredible.
Check out this production video, which shows off some of the nasties which will be menacing Kubo on the big screen.
Only Laika would take the concept of stop motion and apply it to a towering puppet, the largest creature ever used with this kind of technology. As a company they're not afraid to innovate on this age old format, including using CG to spice up the scenes.
The story here looks pretty huge and we couldn't be more excited to see how it all turns out.
Kubo and the Two Strings is out in Irish cinemas on the 9th of September, 2016.
