Because he is a crazy person, Richard Linklater started a movie experiment 12 years ago. He wanted to chart the youth of a person from a child to an adult, and he wanted to do it with the same cast over more than a year.
So he did. And the result is Boyhood.
It's easily one of the best films of the year and will certainly be a major contender for the Oscar in 2015 but its also a technical marvel, a film made across a span of years which puts even something like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings to shame. Of course its a very different film but you can get a look at the process in this fascinating behind the scenes video which focuses mainly on the young leads.
It really is a unique piece of filmmaking, with touchstones for anyone who has ever been a child or a parent - pretty much all people.
If you missed it in cinemas you should definitely check out Boyhood onDVD and blu-ray from the 19th of January 2015.
