Wicked the Musical has been running since 2003 to generally rave reviews, now it's heading for the big screen.
This project has been rumoured for a long time and we've even written about it a couple of times but this time the word seems official, mostly because it comes from Universal Studios' Twitter account.
This annoucement also has the distinct advantage of time, with a release date still three and a half years from today. Given that some kind of preproduction or scripting must already be underway, that gives everyone involved the chance to get it right - and they're going to have to for fear of angering millions of fans around the world.
No cast or crew has been announced but we're going to come right out and say that Anna Kendrick would make a great - Elphaba. She has some singing chops (though she's no Idina Menzel) and a relationship with Universal musicals thanks to the Pitch Perfect series.
Expect to hear plenty more between now and December 2019.
