According to WhatsApp founder Jan Koum, WhatsApp has 600 million active users on a monthly basis. Not bad for a free texting service he began in a Santa Clara townhouse just five years ago.
Interestingly, that number has jumped a whopping 100 million users since only April 2014. A month prior to this, co-founder Brian Acton insisted WhatsApp had been acquiring one million new users on a daily basis since December 2013. Given the figures as of August 2014, we believe him.
Naturally, much of WhatsApp’s explosive success can be attributed to a stunning 19 billion dollar buyout by Facebook back in February. Indeed, around the time of the acquisition, Zuckerberg himself had hoped the popular messaging app would “connect 4 to 5 billion people over the next five years.”
Outlandish as that sounds, WhatsApp certainly seems to be moving in the right direction…
