Android Lollipop will let you wake phone by picking it up

Who has the time to wake up their phone by pressing a button or tapping their screen? Most people, we would guess, but Android 5.0 Lollipop will make the process of waking your phone even more efficient.

Android 5.0 will reportedly introduce a new feature called 'Ambient display.' This will allow users to select whether they want to be able to wake their phone simply by picking it up. The feature wasn’t in the developer preview, but an image from the full Android 5.0 ROM and leaked by developer Prashant Gahlot spoils it.

The description attached to the Ambient display feature reads, “Wake screen when device picked up or notifications arrive." This follows in the wake of an official listing on the official Android Lollipop page, which says "where supported by the hardware, your device will wake up as soon as you pick it up or tap the screen twice."

No word regarding which devices will support the feature. It’s certainly an intriguing addition, but we are curious to see how it affects battery life.
