Apple is reportedly seeking out partnerships to increase the functionality of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus’ NFC chip.
Apple is currently in talks with potential partners about using the technology for keycards, public transport tickets, and more, according to The Information. The report states that Apple has been in talks with HID Global and Cubic, who make electronic ‘keycard’ secure building access and transit fare systems.
Apple already announced a similar partnership with Starwood Hotels. Apple users can use their Apple Watch instead of the traditional hotel keycard, but this uses Bluetooth rather than NFC technology.
As it stands, the NFC chip can only be used for payments through Apple Pay, but there is room for added functionality. We would certainly appreciate the option of simply holding our phones near a hotel keycard reader rather than battling with a keycard that occasionally refuses to work.
Apple is yet to comment on this report, and the companies listed did not want to speak to The Information on the record.
