What started as a simple prank has led to the creation of a new iPhone accessory, thanks to online demand. Hyperkin will release a device that turns a run-of-the-mill iPhone into a Gameboy.
The Smart Boy is modelled on the old Gameboy Colour models, and will allow iPhone owners to use original Gameboy cartridges to play games on their phone. iPhone users control the games using the Gameboy-style buttons on the SmartBoy’s body.
The company’s sketches of the mock product were well received online. Hyperkin revealed on its Facebook page that it “sort of was” an April Fools’ joke. It was leaked with “the initial intent of testing the market” to see if it was something that people were interested in. And thanks to the level of interest in the potentially fake product, Hyperkin said that the Smart Boy is now in development.
It’s early days yet. Hyperkin hopes that the Smart Boy will have a built-in battery that can be charged through the phone and provides five hours of gameplay. There is no release date set for the device just yet. Hyperkin also revealed that it will be experimenting with an Android compatible device.
