The unique double-sided YotaPhone 2 will be released worldwide, starting with a European release this month.
The YotaPhone 2 features a 5-inch AMOLED display on its front, and a slightly smaller 4.7-inch e-ink screen on what would ordinarily be the rear of the device. This enables some rather novel features. The rear display can be used to display the time and other alerts in a more battery-friendly way, and works with essential apps like Google Maps, calendar, calling, texts, and more.
YotaPhone officially announced the release of the device on Twitter. Londoners will be among the first to get their hands on the device. A popup shop in Shoreditch will sell the device from 18:00GMT today.
It certainly sounds like a novel device, though the two-sided display also concerns us. While the rear display will be less battery intensive, we’re going to be a little nervous to actually lay it down on a table, especially if there are chilled drinks anywhere nearby.
The YotaPhone 2 will launch around Europe shortly, followed by an American launch early in 2015.
