Emoji is the fastest growing language in the UK

Emoji is now the fastest growing language in the UK and is evolving faster than ancient visual languages like hieroglyphics.

Professor Vyv Evans of Bangor University is studying the "speed of evolution" in the use of the little icons in the place of words. He claims that “Emoji is the fastest growing form of language in history based on its incredible adoption rate and speed of evolution.”

He added that "as a visual language emoji has already far eclipsed hieroglyphics, its ancient Egyptian precursor which took centuries to develop.”

A survey by TalkTalk Mobile found that 72% of 18 to 25-year-olds think it’s easier to put their feelings across in emoji icons than in text.

The traditional smiley face is the most popular emoji, while crying with laughter and love heart make up the top three.

Andy Murray tweeted his prediction of how his wedding day would unfold via emoji last month. See if you can work out how he thought he'd be spending his day!
