ESB and Vodafone have just announced a massive deal, with the companies teaming up to bring fibre broadband to everyone in Ireland.
At least€450 million will be invested in the project and speeds are set to rise to between 200 Mbps and a massive 1000 Mbps - making the Irish network one of the fastest in the world. The upgrade will partly happen via existing electricity cables in a first for Europe.
Pilot programs will start in 2014 with the bulk of the population gaining access from early 2015. Look for the first glimpse of these speeds in places like Letterkenny and Tralee in the coming months. And while ESB and Vodafone will own the network, other operators will be able to access them.
Proper broadband is on the way!
