Virtual reality is kinda, sorta, maybe back - or at least the makers of Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus would very much like you to think so.
While we've yet to experience these products ourselves plenty of people are starting to get their hands on the gear and coming up with new and exciting ways of viewing digital media. A group of Polish chaps grabbed an Oculus Rift and with many fancy technological things managed to pair the left and right eyes to a pair of GoPro cameras.
Then the cameras can be mounted on a backpack and elevated above the level of the person's point of view. One the camera are synced to the headset again you'll be able to see yourself from a third person view as you move around.
It's not quite so simple though - the camera have to be moved with a separate control stick as they won't match the movement of the headset and with the two not in alignment we would imagine it gets vomitory quite quickly. But the concept is there and the idea of being able to float above ourselves must be a strange kind of thrill.
Now we just have to curb the thrall of wanting to act like we do in video games...
