Facebook Lite it now a thing.
And the thing that it does is like Facebook, only actually accessible if you don't have a super-powered smartphone.
The new version of the app is designed to run better on 2G data networks and older/slower Android phones. It's targeted at developing markets and has seen a release in just a handful of countries to date -Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnamand Zimbabwe.
It's a pretty smart move by the company, especially as the current version of the app becomes more and more dependent on a fast data connection. Users new to mobile handsets in countries where the networks are still being developed will be able to get a taste of what the social network has to offer and can easily graduate to the fancier version of the app iin the future.
It's not clear yet when (or if) this new version of the app will launch in all regions but if this first rollout does well you could expect to see it spread a wider net later in 2015.
