Google doodle celebrates year of trending topics

Google’s newest doodle celebrates the year that was with a look back at the trending topics of the year.

Flappy Bird earns a treasured place in the animated gif and with good reason. It took over smartphones everywhere for a brief, but memorable time that concluded with the developer pulling the app from the store.

Unsurprisingly, the 2014 World Cup, symbolised by a bouncing football, is featured. And space exploration was referenced with imagery of the Rosetta space mission and India’s Mars Orbiter. The former was also voted the most important scientific breakthrough of 2014 by the editors of Science. The mission marked the first time a spacecraft was put in orbit around a comet and landed a robotic probe on its surface.

Among the more positive searches this year was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This took over social media during the summer and saw people douse themselves in ice cold water with donations going to charity.
