Google files trademark for Ara modular smartphone

Project Ara was the codename for Google’s modular smartphone, and a trademark filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office indicates that the final product will simply be called Ara.

The Google Ara is a modular handset that will allow users to build their own smartphone by connecting various pieces, such as a screen, a camera, and so on. Owners will be able to upgrade as they wish by simply swapping out the module that they would like to change. Also, modules can be swapped out without even needing to turn the handset off.

Apparently, the base Ara kit will launch at a budget friendly price and additional modules will be available via a dedicated online store. Google is basing this brand new store on its Play Store.

It is rumoured that the Google Ara will be released early in 2015. This trademarking of the name indicates that Google could be right on track for this tentative and loose release date.
