Google says that around a third of searches from mobile devices are related to the searcher's physical location. It's going to use this knowledge to showcase even more ads.
The search giant is rolling out a new type of ad that will let companies buy the ability to put a small logo over their premises on Google Maps. This should help them stand out, particularly if someone is simply scanning a city. This type of ad is already shown in Google-owned navigation app Waze.
That's not the only new type of ad coming to Google Maps. The service will also let retailers display ads for particular products or in-store discounts.
For now, the ads won't figure into the spoken navigation directions on the app. But that's something that Google isn't ruling out just yet.
