If you were looking for an excuse to visit IKEA in the near future, this could be it. The retail giant unveiled a range of furniture complete with wireless charging spots.
The Home Smart range was shown off at Mobile World Congress. It will include lamps, bedside tables and a coffee table. Also included in the range is a charging pad for individual surfaces.
Ikea’s business area manager of lighting and wireless charging, Jeanette Skjelmose, said that this range came about because the company knows that people hate the mess of cables in their home. She added, “Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.”
IKEA’s Home Smart range uses the wireless charging standard QI, which is supported by the Samsung Galaxy S6. Phone owners with incompatible devices will be able to pick up charging covers, so that their new furniture does more than simply look good.
This new range of furniture will go on sale in April this year. Will integrated charging become the new normal for our furniture? Technology industry analyst, Jeff Kagan, told Agence France-Presse that he suspects it will.
