Following Google’s lead, Apple announced that iOS 10 will feature a more diverse selection of emoji.

Apple revealed that iOS 10 will feature more than 100 new and redesigned emoji when it is released this autumn. It said, “This exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options.”

Apple says that it is working closely with the Unicode Consortium to “ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere.”

One of the redesigned emoji is the gun, a black and silver revolver. This is to be replaced by a water pistol with a green and orange body and a white trigger. An Apple spokesperson declined to give a comment, but the Guardian’s sources confirmed that the water pistol replaces the gun.
