June 29th 2007. The day
Pixar’s Ratatouille hit cinemas.
This day five years ago
Apple launched its prolific Smartphone unto the world. And as trendy as it is to attack
Apple for their awkward practices and bald-yourself-pulling-out-hair-in-frustration
iTunes updates, it’s worth remembering the
iPhone really was the catalyst in this personal, mobile information revolution that still shapes our lives, bank balances and the woven seams of our trouser pockets.
So to celebrate, how about some Truth Bombs!?
• Each iPhone iteration
(iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S) has accompanied one of the five major
iOS releases.
• In Q3 2007, 0.27 million
iPhones were sold worldwide according to
Apple’s Fiscal figures
• For Q2 2012, that figure is 35.10 million and counting!
• The estimated development cost of the original
iPhone project was $150m over the course of 30 months
•
Apple’s App Store launched on only July 10th 2008 – That roughly the same time
The Dark Knight was released in cinemas!
• It originally launched with 500 apps. Now it boasts more than 1000 times that number.
• Back in 2007,
Apple Paid $1m for the
iPhone.com domain name. It’s worth clarifying, they’re not usually this expensive...
• Within the first three days of its availability, 1.7 million
iPhone 4 units were sold
• June 8th, 2009, within the same 2 month timeframe as
J.J. Abrams Star Trek, the
App Store passed the 1billion downloads mark.
•
Apple has filed 200 patent applications in relation to its coveted
iPhone technology
• The
iPhone 4’s aluminosilicate glass is 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic. Which plastic in particular? Well, I don’t know. But it’s pretty impressive!
Five years is an alarmingly brief time frame for the expression “There’s an App for that!” to become a global idiom. These days the very notion of NOT having a camera, radio, telephone, music player and magical touchscreen internet machine in your pocket borders on the unthinkable.
And you can thank the
iPhone and its various iterations for the spreading to particular compulsive need.
Speaking of which, a gold star for whoever’s owned 3 or more of the following...
