Beyoncé made her latest album, Lemonade, available exclusively on Tidal over the weekend. If you want to stream it, Tidal is your only available outlet, but those looking to buy it can get it from Tidal or from iTunes.
Tidal had a brief period of exclusivity on the selling of the album, but streaming exclusivity could be in place for some time. Beyoncé is a co-founder of Tidal, so it’s unlikely that she’ll U-turn on this as quickly as Kanye West did.
With West facing possible legal issues over making The Life of Pablo available elsewhere, artists who sign up to these exclusive deals may think twice before releasing albums elsewhere.
Those who purchase Lemonade via Tidal will get a 90-day free trial of the streaming service. This, Tidal says, opens it up to fans around the world, even in countries where Tidal hasn't launched. iTunes users won’t get any added benefits, but that’s unlikely to matter if that’s how they listen to music.
