Jawbone patents 'jiggling' system to measure body fat percentage
Fitness and health trackers are becoming more widespread when it comes to wearable and smart technology, and Jawbone is taking another step in that direction after filing a patent application for a method for measuring body fat percentage.

The method utilises existing devices such as smartphones, tablets or, as you’d expect, wristbands like the UP24. The system takes advantage of hardware that is already present in said devices. Using features such as the display, accelerometer, gyroscopes, microphones, and GPS, among others, users can be told where to position the device to best measure body fat percentage.

The device then emits an impulse that measures body fat; essentially, the device “jiggles” your fat and measures the frequency of the jiggles to provide an estimate of body fat percentage.

Body fat percentage is a more telling metric than some other fitness metrics, but it clearly won’t be to everyone’s taste.
