Nobody wants to sit around for several minutes watching shaky footage. That’s why Microsoft released Hyperlapse, a video stabilisation app that also lets you make videos more “easily consumable.”
That means you can condense footage them into a more watchable time frame as well as stabilising it. The app’s webpage says that you could, for example, “show your friends what you saw on that 12-mile hike you took last weekend or let them experience how it felt to fly down the mountain on your recent ski trip.”
The Hyperlapse apps page has all the download links you’ll need. There are free variants available for Windows Phone 8.1 and certain Android phones.
The Microsoft Hyperlapse Pro Preview is available for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. It’s geared more towards professional video makers.
Pixar’s John Lasseter recently said that the iPhone and GoPro could be the next big things in film. “They give a vibrancy you have never been able to have before,” he said. Perhaps Microsoft is hoping to give filmmakers food for thought with this new innovation. Timelapse videos certainly seem like they'll be easier to shoot than ever.
