Microsoft Working on Smartwatch?
Company files patent application for device...

If ever you needed convincing that the smartwatch industry is going to be big business in the very near future, Microsoft looks like it's ready to join the like of Sony, Samsung, LG and Apple by bringing its very own device to market - at least if a patent application filed all the way back in 2012 is anything to go by.

While it's possible that the company was simply protecting its ideas with the patent, knowing that the other big players in the technology field were all working on their own smartwatch variants, the likelihood is that, with the takeover of Nokia's mobile division now complete, Microsoft will have a much firmer platform to launch the new hardware in the future.

The patent outlines several proposed uses and features for the smartwatch, defining it as a "wearable personal information system" that'll allow users to listen to music, track their exercise, and make and receive calls and texts.

Whether or not the device is actually in development remains to be seen, but we certainly wouldn't rule it out.
