Microsoft's Holoportation lets you send Star Wars hologram messages

Microsoft’s latest tech demo shows off ‘Holoportation,’ a use that could see you create a holographic version of yourself to communicate with people elsewhere.

In the demo video, Shahram Izadi introduces the idea and then a colleague appears in the room beside him thanks to this technology. The quality of the 3D is quite impressive.

Donning a HoloLens, Izadi and his colleague then share the same virtual space. Their high-fives could use some work, but it’s an impressive demonstration nonetheless.

In another segment of the video, his daughter is in a space with sensors and appears in his room as a hologram. It shows that this could be a great piece of technology for communication, though she knows how to lay on the guilt, telling him she misses him and asking when he's coming home.

The system can be used in real time, but also offers a playback feature, so you can relive these captured memories.
