With a vote of 534 votes for and only 25 against, the European Parliament has voted to remove roaming charges for calls, texts and data while abroad. Thus, all mobile phone use will cost the same within the European Union, be the user abroad of in their home state.
There are some caveats however…
Firstly, this bill still requires approval from individual EU governments. Secondly, once it receives them, it still won’t take effect until December 15th 2015.
Regardless, this is good news. And it comes on the back of a survey which explicitly stated that 94% of European phone users are extremely cautious with their data when travelling outside their own country. The EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes apparently spoke for us all when she stated “consumers are fed up with being ripped off.”
