Nintendo “have no desire to get into telephony”, the company’s American President, Reggie Fils-Aime told CNN recently.
Speculation and rumor had been circulating the gaming giant following their negotiations with American network provider ATandT, regarding their provision of free Wi-fi for the recently released Nintendo 3DS.
Nintendo “believe that we will earn our way into someone's pocket without having to offer that (phone capability) as an additional factor.” Considering the DS is well on its way to becoming the highest grossing games console of all time (a title held by the obscenely popular PS2) and the reported sell outs, and subsequent shortages, of the 3DS it seems a statement founded more from experience than arrogance.
When it comes to the merging of both telephonic and gaming worlds, Fils-Aime’s believes “phones are utilities. Phones are not by definition entertainment devices.'
A bold statement, and one that the recently reviewed Xperia Play, and not to mention a few hundred thousand Smartphone software applications may take umbrage with.
