It looks as though one of the longest serving and most recognizable names in the mobile industry could be about to disappear, with Nokia set to become Microsoft Mobile once the formalities of the Redmond company's takeover have been completed according to a report on Digital Trends.
However, it doesn't look like the actual Nokia brand will be going anywhere any time soon. The report, which is based on a supposed leak from a letter between the companies, goes on to clarify that it's more likely that the department taken over by Microsoft will see its name changed, while the actual branding on smartphones, such as the Windows Phone exclusive Lumia range, would remain as Nokia.
In terms of customer perception, that's most likely going to prove a more successful long term strategy for Microsoft than rebranding everything with its own badge, particularly given the fact that most people don't see the company, gaming division aside, as being particularly exciting when it comes to technology.
With the takeover set to complete before the end of this month, we'll find out for sure what Microsoft's plans are for its new acquistion.
