In 2011, one billion tweets were posted every five days. Among the notable events which garnered interest was the death of Osama Bin Laden (5,106 tweets per second), the earthquake on USA’s East coast (5,449 tweets per second) and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan (5,530 tweets per second).
The Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United received 6,303 tweets per second while Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement sent people to Twitter in their droves (8,868 tweets per second). However, the most notable event of the year on Twitter was the broadcasting of Castle in the Sky on Japanese TV in December which hit over 25,000 tweets per second.
