Up until now, if you wanted to get your hands on a OnePlus One smartphone, you had to be invited to buy one. It’s a system that worked pretty well for the fledgling company and made people talk about them. But now, anyone can buy a OnePlus One handset, provided they do it on a Tuesday.
The company today announced that open sales will take place every Tuesday. Starting at 8 am (GMT) every Tuesday, the OnePlus One will be available to purchase in both 16GB Silk White and 64GB Sandstone Black for 24 hours.
While the company says it wants to get the handset to as many people as possible, the invite system remains in place the other six days of the week. Those who buy a OnePlus One handset on a Tuesday will receive invites to send to friends.
OnePlus wrote a blog post explaining that it will continue to experiment and improve its systems. The company is likely to release the OnePlus 2 later this year; will this utilise the tried and tested invite system or could we see open sales from the off?
